Rachel Wilcox (Lindsay Lohan) is an uncontrollable 18 years of age. With his car last fall, Rachel has broken the ultimate rule of her mother (Felicity Huffman) Lilly's house in San Francisco. Not knowing where to take the impulsive and mischievous girl, Lilly drags her daughter to a place I had sworn never to return: the home of her own mother in Idaho. Matriarch Georgia Randall (Jane Fonda) lives her life by a number of unbreakable rules - God comes first and hard work to eat very close second - and wants everyone who shares her home do the same. She will make anyone who takes the Lord's name in vain, washing the mouth with a bar of soap. Now saddled with raising the young, will require the patient's breath everyone takes to understand Rachel's fury.

Georgia, organized a work of Rachel as the girl in the office of Dr. Simon Ward (Dermot Mulroney), the local veterinarian, who also unofficially treats people. His two nephews, Sam (Dylan McLaughlin) and Ethan (Zachary Gordon), are often at the home of Georgia. Simon is not interested in other women or Rachel, so she thinks he is gay. However, Simon's sister, Paula (Laurie Metcalf) reveals that he is still mourning the death of his wife and son died in a car accident three years ago. He refuses to have sex with Rachel even when she tries to seduce him, but some passion for Lilly, I've dated in the past.
